Music Review: The Game: LAX

9/10

Whether it be the escalating nature of rap beef, or the declining record sales in the music industry, The Game has proven to be one of Hip Hop's most resilient if not unbalanced figures. His short yet illustrious three year career has seen him trade barbs with the likes of Joe Budden to 50 Cent (and Jay-Z if you want to get technical), though in the midst of that he has risen awareness to the West Coast.

Now The Game returns with the much anticipated "LAX", though this album is not highlighted by the now dead G Unit beef (which is beaten to death at this point, though there are still shots thrown in the album), but the threat that this may be his last album. The feeling of a finite ending is strewn throughout the album, which is preceded and ended with a prayer by DMX, who has been considered misunderstood as well throughout his career.

The one thing that stands out about the album is the more aggressive tone of The Game, especially when standing next to Raekwon on the surprisingly concise "Bulletproof Diaries". When he isnt standing toe to toe to the Chef, he sits the listener right next to him in the car on "House Of Pain" the DJ Toomp produced next single. Game has declared war on his doubters, and is set to prove that he belongs on the "Top 10" next to Kanye and Lil' Wayne (who appear on the album as a producer and a feature respectively). While his snubbing on the list is questionable, the album has the dubious honor of being Game's best album to date, and that should surely net him a spot soon.

"LAX" also features the Triple A production known from The Game, featuring Cool & Dre, Nottz, Hi-Tek and a sizable contribution by Jonathan "J.R." Rotem. Just Blaze and of course Dr. Dre are missing here however.

It's also interesting to mention the awesome "Let Us Live". Produced by Scott Storch (where is he?) Game does his best Nasir Jones impression (Nas makes an appearance here as well) with rapid fire delivery mixed with Westcoast brutality. I'd go out on a limb and say its one of the Game's best songs ever.

That's not to say that the album doesnt have any rough patches. There is obvious filler here, such as the utterly boring Ludacris featured "Ya Heard" or the Ne-yo assisted "Gentlemen's Affair", both of which scream cutting room floor additions.

"LAX" doesnt stray too far from Game's formula of albums as far as production and content goes, though as an MC he has improved, and whether he is leaving the game or not he shows the growth of an artist that is still on the verge of a breakthrough.

DMX releases his crackhead rage on a judge

Dr. Dre's son found dead

this type of stuff is never easy to see. my prayers go out to dre and his family

From XXL;

"Andre Young Jr., also know as the son of Dr. Dre, passed away on Saturday, August 23 of unknown causes. He was just 20 years of age.

According to the L.A. Weekly, Young ventured out the previous night and did not return to his Woodland Hills home until 5:30 AM the next day. His mother checked in on Young at 10:30 AM that morning and found her son to be unresponsive. An ambulance was called to the scene and later Young was pronounced dead.

Young, Jr. is not Hood Surgeon, which is another son of Dr. Dre’s, Curtis Young, who has embarked on a career as a rapper.

A toxicology report is pending, according to the Los Angeles County coroner. The cause of death for Young has not yet been determined as press time.

Dr. Dre’s label only issued a short statement: “Dr. Dre is mourning the loss of his son Andre Young Jr. Please respect his family’s grief and privacy at this time.”

Reviews Because I'm Bored: The Clipse Presn't: Re Up Gang

Drug rap aficionados The Clipse and their group the Re Up Gang have garnered an esteemed following (mostly on the internet but i digress) amongst hip hop fans, whether it be the near classic and under promoted "Hell Hath No Fury" or their much talked about "We Got It For Cheap" mixtapes, the fans have been behind them through their many ups...and downs.

Take for instance their recent upheaval from Jive records, to whom Pusha and Malice were locked into for years, into a more lucrative situation, with new management to boot!

With this bright future looming, its finally time for the brothers (pushing 30 years old along with the rest of their camp as it is) to make their name in the game.

This album is not the way to do it.

The Re Up Gang compilation is not an album but a redone compilation of We Got It For Cheap Part 3 with elementary, soulless, ultimately middling production (all done by some no names called "The Sleepwalkers"...seriously)
. Where were the big name producers Clipse promised us (Scott Storch, turn around)? are they being saved for the much more anticipated Clipse album?

I can understand that the instrumentals couldnt be carried over into a retail album, but for soul of their mixtapes to be unceremoniously ripped out and replaced with Fisher Price instruments is ultimately discouraging. This is the same Clipse more or less, but this isnt the same marriage of sound and lyrics that we know from them.

Starting off is the mediocre repackaging of the Re Up Intro, followed by....well songs that are mostly named similarly to the mixtape. there's "Street Money" (which sounds like the sleepwalkers stole the "Patron" instrumental from Yung Joc aand added the sound of gorillas having sex) and...uh..."Money". I would be repeating myself to try and re-review old songs, but It's worth noting that these songs arent bad, but they arent a accurate representation of the quality known of the Clipse, and even the skills we know from them are starting to get a little old.

The new songs, including first single "Fast Life", which features NONE of the rest of Re Up Gang..thanks guys, and "Been Through So Much" are also marred by the lazy, uninspired production. They leave you less likely to listen to what Pusha and Malice (or Sandman and Ab Liva where applicable) are saying and instead make you want to change the track.

For the Clipse to complain and exclaim about their "movement" being overlooked by more successful acts (such as Lil' Wayne), the fact is, in their first play in the big game, they fumbled, and this doesnt make the rest of their group look any good either. For what its worth, at least we have the new Clipse album to look forward to. If it releases this decade.

Put On (Behind The Scenes)

LMAO @ "Let Me Down!"

Yung Berg gets the Business?

This cant be good for his street cred

From Necole Bitchie:

"I received an email yesterday night that stated Yung Berg (affectionately known as “Light Butt” on this blog) caught a beat down at a club in Detroit. Before running with it, I decided to check some sources to validate if the story was true and I found out that he indeed caught a beat down. Here’s what I was told:

Yung Berg flew into Detroit late friday night for Hot 102.7’s annual Summer Jamz concert but instead of going straight to his hotel as scheduled, he made a pit stop at a club called Plan B, which i’m hearing is partially owned by Detroit rapper Trick Trick. Now mind you, Berg didn’t tell his label, his management or anyone that he was about to sneak off to the club.

Within minutes of getting inside the club, both Yung Berg and Cap (the person he met up with) were attacked by a group of men affiliated with Trick Trick. I am hearing that Trick Trick was NOT a part of the beat down. In fact, he helped break the fight up. Yung Berg’s security quickly scooped him off the ground and rushed him onto Cap’s tour bus that was parked outside of the club. His transformer chain (pictured above) was snatched during the mayhem. He was then taken to his hotel but did not receive any medical attention. He only suffered minor cuts and bruises and of course he’s a** was in total shock. He literally landed in Detroit and within that same hour caught a beat down. “Welcome To Detroit“!

By this time, Berg wanted to get the hell out of dodge, so arrangements were made and he was put on a plane back home. To all the Detroit fans that were disappointed that he didn’t perform, he really wanted to please his fans but when ish like this go down, please understand “it’s time to go”.

As far as the cause of the beat down, Yung Berg apparently said something in the past that was very disrespectful about Detroit rappers and Detroit don’t play that. Not sure if you remember, but Trick Daddy ended up catching it in Detroit by Trick Trick a few years ago.

Lesson Learned: Don’t say sh*t about Detroit, unless you want to suffer some consequences."

Well, in tribute to my homie Berg;

um...ok.
