goddamn, all of these auxillary players in this beef this is like Hip Hop Masterpiece Theater. Can we end this already?

"Heartbreak" may score Kanye #1 next week

According to Hitsdailydouble.com:

West's Roc-a-Fella/Def Jam album, 808s and Heartbreak, in which he tackles the Auto-Tuner and his own inner demons, will be #1 on next Tuesday’s chart with a total that looks to be between 450-500k.

Meanwhile the OTHER big hip hop release, Ludacris' "Theater Of The Mind" is expected to debut at #3, behind the (really good) much delayed Guns N Roses LP "Chinese Democracy"; which is like the Rock equivalent of "Detox".

Also from Hits;

Ludacris’ Island Def Jam album, Theater of the Mind, looks good for 225k, followed by the other one of IDJ’s big holiday power trio, The Killers’ Day and Age, clocking in with 200k more or less.

This is good for Hip Hop though, having Kanye hold off the legendary ego of Axl Rose (with a decidedly NON Hip Hop album at that) and Luda being able to hold of labelmates The Killers, who did great numbers with their last LP. I'd say that 2008 was a great year for sales overall.

Music Review: Kanye West: 808's & Heartbreak

Kanye West: 808's & Heartbreak

9.5/10

After a turbulent year, super producer/rapper and artist Kanye West returns with the dark, emotionally charged and ultimately groundbreaking "808's & Heartbreak", an album that strips away the labels and braggadocio that West is known for in return for a cold hard look at how someone in the public eye can deal with loss.

The concept of "emotional nakedness" keeps being thrown around by West during the promotion for this album, and the term is actually less of a buzz word than it seems. Accompanied by the Roland TR-808 drum machine and the polarizing pitch correction program Auto Tune (popularized by T-Pain, who contributes to the songwriting of a few tracks on the album) Kanye has developed a sound that betrays his usually sample driven creations to one that is half Portishead, and the other half Phil Collins in terms of minimal sounds juxtaposed with strong songwriting.

And the songwriting serves as the album's best quality; such as "Welcome To Heartbreak" ("my friend showed me pictures of his kids/all i could show him was pictures of my cribs") and the Young Jeezy assisted "Amazing" ("im the only thing that i'm afraid of") which portrait West cracking under the loneliness that his fame has brought him. The ode to the cell phone/PC password checking stalker girlfriend "RoboCop" is a particular standout, as well as having the distinction of being one of the album's most complex and peculiar productions.

"808's" is also particularly effective in that there is no rapping on it whatsoever, save a few verses. Armed with Auto Tune, Kanye puts caution to the wind and actually (gasp) sings or harmonizes most of the tracks on the album. It's a jarring change at first, but it changes the energy of the album. Kanye has transformed from a mere MC, to a pop artist, and as per his claim of "emotional nakedness", he is baring his soul through a method that is of course, uncomfortable (trust me, he's no Luther Vandross).

Though dedicated to his own losses, "808's & Heartbreak" is Kanye's most down-to earth offering yet, trading the Goyard trunks and the Black cards for a chance to sit in on his own therapy session.

Music Review: Ludacris: Theater Of The Mind

Ludacris: Theater Of The Mind

8.5/10

Ludacris, or Chris Bridges to his Hollywood fans, is on the crux of a rare occurance for most MC's. He has created a successful movie career and he's managed to stay relevant while still keeping his stock in hip-hop, even though he's still overlooked by many other artists in the game today.

Cris embraces this idea on "Theater of the Mind", fighting back his detractors while successfully merging the double headed monster of movies and music into a conceptual album. Taking a page out of a musical script, Ludacris sprinkles guests (read: co-stars) throughout each "scene" that tells a different story, and for the most part it works.

"Everybody Hates Chris", produced by DJ Don Cannon features legendary comedian Chris Rock as Ludacris flexes his ability to be lyrically impressive and hilarious at the same time ("rappers still talkin shit like they was rhymin in farts"), while Luda flexes his muscle with Nas and Jay-Z on "I Do It For Hip-Hop" and stands his ground against the former foes turned friends.

If there is one thing the album does have against it, is that it feels bloated at times. There is only two songs where Luda rocks solo, and a few of the "co-stars" are head scratchingly random (Spike Lee? Floyd Mayweather? Ok....) or dont accurately match up to Luda lyrically.

"Theater" is Luda's most enjoyable LP yet, and it stands as one of the top ten albums of the year, adequately proving that he's possibly one of the most slept on artists in the game right now.

Alfamega Speaks on the Dirty Awards fracas

From MTV.com:

Shawty Lo claims while he was performing his set, Alfa, Big Kuntry and some other of T.I.'s clique came near to the front of the stage and started staring him down. Lo said he had no choice but to perform his T.I. dis record, "Don't I."

Mega disagreed: He said he and the crew were near the front of the stage all night.

"When anybody was performing, we was up, moving around," Alfa insisted. "We was rocking to Lo. He was doing his thing. Now when the dis song happened, I was like, 'What is dude doing?' "

Shortly after "Don't I" started, somebody from the crowd threw a chair at Lo and company. Mega said it wasn't him and he actually didn't see the chair being thrown.

"When I looked up, I seen the dude onstage with a chair in his hand," Alfa remembered. "Then I noticed it, somebody with us, a female, she was holding her face. Then I ran towards them. My attempt was to not fight, but to go up there and say, 'Somebody with you hit this girl.' By that time they had my man Kuntry in cuffs.
"

"What happened with me — Tip had nothing to do with that," Alfa added, now going into what led to the night's second incident. "It just happened. They was performing the song, I was like, 'Let's have fun.' I start dancing. I'm feeling good. That's my boy, Yung L.A., he made it. I get on top of the table, Shawty gets on the table. Shawty fakes like he's gonna throw a drink on me. By then I stepped down."

Now this is where the show's organizers may have wished they'd come up with a different seating plan: Mega's and Lo's tables were just a few feet away from each other, so close that Mega said his feet didn't have to touch the ground to reach his foe.

"I could have made a move. I could have jumped from one table to the next," Mega recalled. "It really wasn't that far apart, probably about four or five feet. It was close enough that the drink in his hand could have splashed on me. I stepped down from the table, somebody said to something to me. I seen three or four more dudes like they gonna do me bodily harm. My first reaction — me being who I am, I am a funny dude, but hey, I can wake up — was to smack the dude. I didn't punch him, I smacked him. I swung on the other dudes, they started swinging. Grand Hustle didn't have nothing to do with that situation. It was on Alfamega."

I'm convinced, EVERY posse needs an Alfamega. I'm buying two copies of his new album (dropping in January according to MTV) lest my first born be smacked by this dude.

Dirty Awards 2008 Battle Between T.I. and Shawty Lo from Gyant on Vimeo

Yeah that was Alfamega knocking Shawty Lo's brother out.

There was also a scuffle after this performance between Shawty Lo and T.I.'s camps;

As Lo performed his version with a chorus "Don't I," an audience member identified by an eyewitness as Capitol recording artist Alfamega, allegedly threw a chair onto the stage.

At that point, witnesses say another artist signed to the T.I.-helmed label stormed the stage, at which point authorities proceeded to break a fight.

T.I. himself took the stage shortly after the fight to accept an award following, a reported private conversation with Shawty-Lo, in which the Grammy Award-winning rapper/actor allegedly insisted once again, that the two end their long-running beef.

He proceeded to denounce the violence and negativity and assured the Dirty Awards audience that he did not condone the fighting.

Shortly thereafter, however, a second fight broke out as T.I. performed his verse from "Ain't I," allegedly substituting some lyrics with verbal jabs at Shawty Lo, with whom he has had an unpleasant relationship throughout the year.

Towards the end of the performance, another member of the Grand Hustle camp allegedly jumped off stage and assaulted a man witnesses said was Shawty Lo's brother.

Also; Jeezy's beef with DJ Drama may be real, as he and LA The Darkman got into it as well.

John Forte comes HOME

Well Bush DOES care about black people after all:

John Edward Forte of North Brunswick, N.J., a graduate of the elite Phillips Exeter Academy prep school who later became a producer for the rap group The Fugees and released two albums on his own, was caught in 2000 at Newark International Airport with two briefcases filled with $1.4 million worth of liquid cocaine, according to court documents.

Forte, 33, a first-time offender, was convicted of possessing the 31 pounds of cocaine with intent to distribute and was sentenced to a minimum of 14 years at Fort Dix, N.J.

With the commutation, Forte will be released Dec. 22, after serving just over seven years. He still faces five years of supervised probation.

Music Review: Ace Hood: Gutta

Ace Hood: Gutta
6/10

The first salvo from the rambunctious but lovable DJ Khaled's "We The Best" imprint; the 20 year-old Ace Hood, has much to prove in the beginning of his career. However "Gutta" is devoid of a real personality to fit with the character.

Starting off an album with a song called "I Don't Give A F*ck" is probably not the best impression you want to give on your first album, but Ace shows off his almost tourette's like ability to spout off his bars ("I dont give an FUC-K/one of those things I tote on me" got a couple of chuckles from me), and it's perhaps it's this ability that gives him an edge over most young MC's of his stature. He has a lyrical potentcy that makes him incomparable to those in his class right now.

However this doesn't save the album from being a well produced disappointment. Ace plays it almost too safe throughout the album, the super-thug/hustler/killer image shines through on tracks like "Get Em Up" (Didn't Lil' Wayne use the "million uppercuts line back in June?) and "Fed Bound", while he gives a track to the ladies on his hit single "Ride" with Trey Songz and the snoozer "Call Me" with an equally unmotivated Lloyd on the chorus.

"Gutta" is at least competently arranged with producers. The Runners, Shawty Redd and Cool & Dre contribute to the album, though newcomers The Inkredibles give the most to the album.

If you're looking for a album with an insight on who Ace Hood is, this is not it. It's one of the characteristics that make his peers like Young Jeezy and even featured guest and frequent DJ Khaled collaborator Rick Ross so well liked; they are able mix their money grabbing exploits a touch of character insight and real empathy. Ace Hood is a great artist with a lot of potential, but lets hope he only makes this rookie mistake once.

Music Review: 88-Keys: The Death Of Adam

88-Keys: The Death of Adam

7.5/10

Acclaimed producer and now artist, 88-Keys tells an epic story of the pursuit of the opposite sex on the eclectic but ultimately lovable "Death Of Adam".

Bookended by a narrative told by an all knowing (female) narrator, "Adam" is a concept album the tale of the title character Adam and his pursuit of a female companion (more specifically a female to have sex with), and details his journey through the friend zone, the first date, and his aforementioned "death" in a twist that isn't too surprising but thought provoking none the less.

As far as the actual album, it's in its own lane in terms of sound, 88-Keys produced the whole album and he has a litany of big time guests (Executive producer Kanye West stops by, as well as Redman, KiD CuDi and Phonte of Little Brother) though it's sparse on actual verses from 88-Keys himself, exposing this album's original life as an instrumental LP. He doesnt show up on "Close Call" with Phonte, and he bounces between singing and rapping with an assisted fuzz filter on his voice; which actually helps in differentiating himself from the guests on the album.

Keys is no Jay-Z (especially with painful lines like "this is a two way street, because everytime i bust my nut you get something to eat") when it comes to the mic, but he manages to put out a purely experimental album that is enjoyable, if not a little juvenile. Not that being immature is bad or anything.

From Jim's interview in this months Complex Mag:

Max B:

Speaking of attention, Max B has been going hard at you lately. He even has a site for it, fuckjimjones.com. How do you feel about that?

Jim Jones: It’s cool. Anything he tries to do, I can either shut it down or get paid for it. I own him, all his publishing, all his contracts. He sold me his publishing to get out of jail. He called me crying on the phone saying, “If you bail me out, I’ll sell you all my publishing and do whatever I got to do.” He damn near said, “I’d suck your dick like a crackhead to get out of jail.” [Laughs.] So you can imagine how frustrated I am, the way I’m living. I got 50 grand in my book bag, and we ain’t even at a video shoot.

Kanye:

You warned Kanye to keep your name out of his mouth after he said some things about you and Juelz closing Summer Jam. Would you ever fully go at him?

Jim Jones: Kanye?! I like making jokes about him, but Kanye is somebody you can just punch his chest old-school style, cave his chest in and shit like that. Like don’t ever, ever, ever talk about me again in your life! It’s just a joke to me. I’m just having fun. I heard him ranting and raving about my name and shit. How would I look having an issue with Kanye? I’d love to work with him. I need a beat from him. I think that’s why I’m most mad. Matter fact, I’ma fuck you up if you don’t give me a beat! [Laughs.]

From NY DAILY NEWS

“This n- [Kanye ] was like, ‘Wow. [Jay-Z] ain’t going to give me the chain,’” Dash alleges in December’s Complex magazine. “I had to take off my chain and give it to him, and I was heated. I had the real canary diamonds. That s- cost $40,000! I told Kanye, ‘Yo, you got to give that back when we get off this stage!’”

Dash contends that after Jay-Z violated the code of hip-hop chivalry, “Kanye hated Jay-Z.”

But a rep for Kanye tells us the story is “ridiculous and totally false.”

Yeah, ok nigga. Besides sounding stupid, why wait to say this now when Kanye and Jay are making millions of dollars?
